Top 6 Reasons To Give Flowers (For Mother’s Day)

In an age of technology when so much of our life is digital, there’s something special about having someone hand deliver a fresh bouquet of flowers. Especially for the woman who has it all, it’s an unexpected treat and a way to bring a smile to mom’s face (in addition to smelling good in her home or office).

In honor of Mother’s Day this month, we wanted to share some fun facts related to the occasion.

  1. Mother’s Day was first celebrated on May 10, 1908 by Anna Jarvis who wanted a way to commemorate her mother’s passing. President Woodrow Wilson declared it an official U.S. holiday in 1914.
  2. Carnations are the traditional Mother’s Day flower to give (and most popular). Not only were they Anna Jarvis’ mother’s favorite, the carnation also signifies purity, faith, love, beauty and charity.
  3. 26% of flower and plant purchases happen around Mother’s Day (according to the Society of American Florists). 1
  4. 1 in every 3 Americans reported buying flowers for Mother’s Day in 2023. Fresh flowers are the most popular followed by outdoor bedding and garden plants, flowering houseplants and green plants. 2
  5. Of the 33% of Americans who purchase flowers and plants, 64% are for mom, 28% for significant others, 19% for mother-in-laws. 2
  6. Americans spend an average of $172.22 on Mother’s Day flowers, totaling more than $21 billion annually (according to the National Retail Federation). 3

Which States Do The Most Floral Delivery Research For Mother’s Day?

Map of states most likely to send flowers for Mother's Day
These are the top states searching for flower deliveries before the pandemic. You can see that Washington DC, Colorado, Wyoming, Alaska, and Hawaii all made the cut. How have things changed this year?

Looks like across the country, searches for flower delivery peak the day before the big day (maybe this is THE year to plan ahead a little more!). But, have you ever wondered which states are doing the most last minute research for Mother’s Day flower deliveries?

According to Google Trends, the most searches for “flower delivery” in May so far this year came from Maine. Rounding out the top five for most searches (ranked from most to fewer) North Dakota, Utah, Montana, and Rhode Island. The states that are the least concerned with researching flower deliveries for Mom this year live in Louisiana, New Jersey, Mississippi, Kentucky, and Hawaii.

What Companies Deliver Eco-Friendly Flowers?

Giving flowers is a tradition that dates back to the early 1900’s when the Florists’ Telegraph Delivery Service (FTD) was first established. Since then hundreds of flower delivery services have bloomed. A number of which follow earth-friendly practices — we’ve reviewed those companies which you can jump to using the links below:

If you’re looking for a unique, totally eco-friendly online flower delivery service, The Bouqs is your go-to site. Flower.com Review

Flower.com logo

Visit Website

Flower.com offers an extensive selection of bouquets for all kinds of occasions, but they have no wedding products. Their delivery area is also wide including all 50 states and some international deliveries. Their floral arrangements are lovely and fresh.

Flower.com lets you choose delivery via a local florist or a shipping service. What really stands out with Flower.com is their huge selection of high-quality gift baskets, balloons, chocolates and other “sides.” You can order everything from Godiva to guava fruit, either separately or in combination with a bouquet.

ProsCons
  • Competitive service/shipping rates
  • Wide selection of floral bouquets and gift baskets
  • Good cancellation policy
  • 24/7 customer service via phone and live chat
  • Products on the pricey side
  • Delivery unavailable in most cities on weekends and holidays
  • No wedding collection or personalized gifts
  • No eco-friendly practices

Pricing

  • $64.99 one dozen red roses in a vase
  • $9.99 service fee for florist deliveries

FTD Review

FTD logo

Visit Website

FTD is a well-known national and international flower delivery service with nearly 100% coverage in the U.S. FTD used to offer a wide variety of products in addition to flower arrangements, but they’ve scaled back to mostly flowers, live plants and food gift baskets. But they still offer add-ons, like cards, candy, balloons and teddy bears with many flower orders. Like 1-800-Flowers, FTD holds both Veriflora and Fair Trade certifications and is committed to eco-friendly practices.

ProsCons
  • Very competitive product pricing
  • Excellent delivery options, even Sundays during holidays
  • Good variety of flowers, plants, gift baskets and candy
  • Eco-friendly practices, with Veriflora and Fair Trade designations
  • Can cancel orders up until it’s en route
  • 24/7 customer service by phone
  • A number of positive user reviews about their complaint resolution
  • Service/shipping fees higher than most
  • No live chat
  • Many complaints about delivery problems (e.g., late delivery, showing up at wrong address, no delivery at all)

Pricing

  • $75 for one dozen red roses in a vase
  • $19.99 next-day delivery

ProFlowers Review

ProFlowers an FTD company logo

Visit Website

ProFlowers, part of the FTD family, offers a large selection of flowers, plants, and gourmet gift baskets compared to many other services. Their flower arrangements and gift baskets are modern and sleek (with fun and cute options as well).

We were especially impressed with the variety and reasonable pricing of their fruit and gift baskets. The major difference with ProFlowers is that nearly all of their flowers arrive in a box with a hydrating sponge and vase, but you’re responsible for arranging them. Depending on the occasion, this could take away some of the wow factor you’re seeking.

I have ordered from ProFlowers a few times for Mother’s Day due to their competitive prices and available options. I prefer to send plants, so my Mom can enjoy them for years to come – not just in the month of May. They always show up on time and send a lovely assortment. The one time flowers showed up less than fresh, I contacted customer service, and they promptly sent out a new bouquet at no cost. – Michelle S., Earth’s Friends

ProsCons
  • Competitive product pricing
  • Good variety of flowers, gift baskets, candy, balloons, etc.
  • Excellent delivery options on holidays & Sundays in some cities
  • Personalized gifts available
  • Eco-friendly practices, with Veriflora and Fair Trade designations
  • Can cancel your order up until it’s en route
  • 24/7 customer service via phone and live chat
  • Service/shipping rates are higher than many (about on par with 1-800-Flowers)
  • Many deliveries require you to arrange flowers yourself
  • A large number of consumer complaints compared to other services about flower quality, delivery problems, etc.

Pricing

  • $50 for one dozen red roses (no vase)
  • $17.99 delivery fee
  • Same day delivery available (extra $4.99; may vary during holidays)
  • $2.99 care & handling fee

Send Flowers Review

Send Flowers logo

Visit Website

There’s really nothing that sets SendFlowers.com apart from the rest of the pack, but that doesn’t mean they’re not worth consideration. Send Flowers offers some great deals on floral arrangements if you order a few days ahead of time.

Their website’s search features are good, and they have a wide variety of bouquets, gift baskets, balloons and candy. But we couldn’t find information about service/shipping charges, their cancellation policy, or order tracking, so their website is fairly bare bones on the business side. If you’re looking for a good deal, see what Send Flowers has to offer.

ProsCons
  • Delivery 7 days per week
  • Wide variety of floral arrangements, gift baskets and other non-floral gifts
  • Can find good deals if you’re not looking for something specific
  • 24/7 customer service via phone and email
  • Service/shipping rates not readily available
  • Cancellation policy not available on website
  • No eco-friendly or charitable practices
  • No live chat

Pricing

  • $59.99 one dozen red roses in a vase
  • Available for same day delivery but service/shipping fees not available until you enter your credit card information

Teleflora Review

Teleflora logo

Visit Website

Teleflora’s U.S. coverage is extensive, and they also handle international deliveries (all from partnerships with local florists). Their bragging rights? Their flowers are always hand-arranged and hand-delivered in an attractive vase by local florists. This is a big plus if you’re going for the wow factor with your gift.

Teleflora has a good variety of arrangements for almost any occasion, although they don’t do wedding flowers. Their flower baskets and gift baskets are pricey, and you don’t get quite as much variety as other services off. Still, Teleflora is definitely worth consideration for your traditional flower delivery events.

ProsCons
  • Good delivery options, 7 days/week and holidays
  • Good variety of arrangements and add-ons (balloons, candy, teddy bears)
  • Can cancel your order up until it’s in process at the florist
  • All flowers delivered in a vase
  • Gives to charitable organizations (although no information about eco-friendly practices)
  • Among the most expensive for product pricing and service/shipping charges we reviewed
  • Only a handful of gift basket options
  • No wedding collections or personalized gifts
  • Customer service hours are unlisted, but they offer phone and email support

Pricing

  • $64.99 for a dozen red roses in a vase
  • $15.99 base service fee

VivaRoses Review

VivaRoses logo

Visit Website

VivaRoses specializes solely in eco-friendly premium roses grown on their family farm, which is located at the base of a volcano. Their roses come nicely packaged in a box in early bud-stage, so they last longer than flowers you’ll get from other sources. Their shipping days and times are limited, so this is not the place for last-minute deliveries. But VivaRoses can make a unique, “out-of-the-box” gift.

ProsCons
  • High-quality roses and packaging
  • Free shipping
  • Eco-friendly roses grown on a family farm
  • Can get a replacement or credit w/in 3 days of delivery if quality is bad
  • Many customers say their roses last up to 2 weeks
  • Expensive
  • Very limited selection
  • No same or next-day shipping
  • Customer support via email only (they have live chat, but it’s rarely live from our experience)
  • Several customer complaints about non-delivery and difficult-to-reach customer service

Pricing

  • $75 for 24 red roses (no vases)
  • Free shipping
