Top 6 Reasons To Give Flowers (For Mother’s Day)
In an age of technology when so much of our life is digital, there’s something special about having someone hand deliver a fresh bouquet of flowers. Especially for the woman who has it all, it’s an unexpected treat and a way to bring a smile to mom’s face (in addition to smelling good in her home or office).
In honor of Mother’s Day this month, we wanted to share some fun facts related to the occasion.
- Mother’s Day was first celebrated on May 10, 1908 by Anna Jarvis who wanted a way to commemorate her mother’s passing. President Woodrow Wilson declared it an official U.S. holiday in 1914.
- Carnations are the traditional Mother’s Day flower to give (and most popular). Not only were they Anna Jarvis’ mother’s favorite, the carnation also signifies purity, faith, love, beauty and charity.
- 26% of flower and plant purchases happen around Mother’s Day (according to the Society of American Florists). 1
- 1 in every 3 Americans reported buying flowers for Mother’s Day in 2023. Fresh flowers are the most popular followed by outdoor bedding and garden plants, flowering houseplants and green plants. 2
- Of the 33% of Americans who purchase flowers and plants, 64% are for mom, 28% for significant others, 19% for mother-in-laws. 2
- Americans spend an average of $172.22 on Mother’s Day flowers, totaling more than $21 billion annually (according to the National Retail Federation). 3
Which States Do The Most Floral Delivery Research For Mother’s Day?
Looks like across the country, searches for flower delivery peak the day before the big day (maybe this is THE year to plan ahead a little more!). But, have you ever wondered which states are doing the most last minute research for Mother’s Day flower deliveries?
According to Google Trends, the most searches for “flower delivery” in May so far this year came from Maine. Rounding out the top five for most searches (ranked from most to fewer) North Dakota, Utah, Montana, and Rhode Island. The states that are the least concerned with researching flower deliveries for Mom this year live in Louisiana, New Jersey, Mississippi, Kentucky, and Hawaii.
What Companies Deliver Eco-Friendly Flowers?
Giving flowers is a tradition that dates back to the early 1900’s when the Florists’ Telegraph Delivery Service (FTD) was first established. Since then hundreds of flower delivery services have bloomed. A number of which follow earth-friendly practices — we’ve reviewed those companies which you can jump to using the links below:

Budget-Friendly: From You Flowers Review
From You Flowers proves you don’t have to fork over a fortune for quality bouquets, even if you want same-day flower delivery. Sure, they offer many pricey, premium-quality products, but there are plenty of beautiful arrangements to fit a tighter budget. On top of that, they offer a ton of discounts and coupons and a reasonable $2.99 service charge for same day delivery.
From You Flowers also has a lot of non-floral gifts, including food, fruit and spa gift baskets, in addition to the typical balloons and candy. You can even get a customized photo vase with a greeting imprinted on it — hello grandparent gift! Finally, From You Flowers advertises a great 100% satisfaction guarantee, so if you’re not satisfied with your experience, they’ll either refund your money or redeliver a new product. Eco-Friendly Practices: The Bouqs Review
If you’re looking for a unique, totally eco-friendly online flower delivery service, The Bouqs is your go-to site. The Bouqs is a niche flower delivery service, for sure — you’re not going to get the traditional gift baskets or add-ons, like balloons and candy. But that’s not their thing. What you will get is beautiful, fresh-cut flowers or live plants that were grown solely in eco-friendly, sustainable farms that respect the environment and farm workers.
The Bouqs sources their flowers from independent U.S. farms as well as farms located on the side of a volcano in Ecuador and the hills of Columbia. All flowers are cut fresh the day they arrange your bouquet.
The company is also building a network of local artisan florists around the U.S. to offer customers same-day delivery (in select locations). You can even set up a subscription, so you get flowers delivered regularly (learn more about flower subscription services). Devoted to being earth-friendly? The Bouqs is the service for you.

Flower.com Review
Flower.com offers an extensive selection of bouquets for all kinds of occasions, but they have no wedding products. Their delivery area is also wide including all 50 states and some international deliveries. Their floral arrangements are lovely and fresh.
Flower.com lets you choose delivery via a local florist or a shipping service. What really stands out with Flower.com is their huge selection of high-quality gift baskets, balloons, chocolates and other “sides.” You can order everything from Godiva to guava fruit, either separately or in combination with a bouquet.

FTD Review
FTD is a well-known national and international flower delivery service with nearly 100% coverage in the U.S. FTD used to offer a wide variety of products in addition to flower arrangements, but they’ve scaled back to mostly flowers, live plants and food gift baskets. But they still offer add-ons, like cards, candy, balloons and teddy bears with many flower orders. Like 1-800-Flowers, FTD holds both Veriflora and Fair Trade certifications and is committed to eco-friendly practices.

ProFlowers Review
ProFlowers, part of the FTD family, offers a large selection of flowers, plants, and gourmet gift baskets compared to many other services. Their flower arrangements and gift baskets are modern and sleek (with fun and cute options as well).
We were especially impressed with the variety and reasonable pricing of their fruit and gift baskets. The major difference with ProFlowers is that nearly all of their flowers arrive in a box with a hydrating sponge and vase, but you’re responsible for arranging them. Depending on the occasion, this could take away some of the wow factor you’re seeking.
I have ordered from ProFlowers a few times for Mother’s Day due to their competitive prices and available options. I prefer to send plants, so my Mom can enjoy them for years to come – not just in the month of May. They always show up on time and send a lovely assortment. The one time flowers showed up less than fresh, I contacted customer service, and they promptly sent out a new bouquet at no cost. – Michelle S., Earth’s Friends

Send Flowers Review
There’s really nothing that sets SendFlowers.com apart from the rest of the pack, but that doesn’t mean they’re not worth consideration. Send Flowers offers some great deals on floral arrangements if you order a few days ahead of time.
Their website’s search features are good, and they have a wide variety of bouquets, gift baskets, balloons and candy. But we couldn’t find information about service/shipping charges, their cancellation policy, or order tracking, so their website is fairly bare bones on the business side. If you’re looking for a good deal, see what Send Flowers has to offer.

Teleflora Review
Teleflora’s U.S. coverage is extensive, and they also handle international deliveries (all from partnerships with local florists). Their bragging rights? Their flowers are always hand-arranged and hand-delivered in an attractive vase by local florists. This is a big plus if you’re going for the wow factor with your gift.
Teleflora has a good variety of arrangements for almost any occasion, although they don’t do wedding flowers. Their flower baskets and gift baskets are pricey, and you don’t get quite as much variety as other services off. Still, Teleflora is definitely worth consideration for your traditional flower delivery events.

VivaRoses Review
VivaRoses specializes solely in eco-friendly premium roses grown on their family farm, which is located at the base of a volcano. Their roses come nicely packaged in a box in early bud-stage, so they last longer than flowers you’ll get from other sources. Their shipping days and times are limited, so this is not the place for last-minute deliveries. But VivaRoses can make a unique, “out-of-the-box” gift.
