Zika Virus: Should I Be Scared for Myself or My Baby?

Mosquito on skin: Zika Virus

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the Zika Virus (also known as the Zika Fever) a global health emergency. The virus was first discovered in the 1940s in Uganda. Since then, cases have been found in warm climates, but this current outbreak is much more widespread with a few cases even popping in areas of the United States (All confirmed cases in the United States were seen in women who had traveled to affected regions). Does that mean you should be scared of the coming warm weather? Should you be scared to get pregnant? A lot depends on where you live and where you travel to. It’s hard to say at this point if that will remain the case or if the risk will spread to the mosquitos in the United States; however, it appears it is definitely something to take seriously and take precautions against, especially if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant…

Easy Almond Milk Recipe

Jar of homemade almond milk

So I have a lactose intolerance issue and have been drinking soy milk for close to 15 years in place of cow’s milk. I recently learned from my doctor that ingesting soy for an extended time period and every day (like I was) could lead to larger health issues, including cancer and other bad things. So in my quest to figure out the best option from both a health and financial perspective, I discovered how easy and affordable it is to make your own almond milk! And with commercial Almond Milk manufacturers now in class action suits about how few almonds yet how many chemicals are in their products, I am further encouraged to make my own. So rather than keeping this as my little secret, I thought I would share this how to make your own almond milk recipe with you…

The Dirty Dozen: What to Buy Organic and What Not

Guide to Eating Clean

I’ve been working on cleaner eating for a while, but because we were still eating out more often than I care to admit, I hadn’t really worked hard to include organics in our budget. I bought organic when the prices weren’t that different (like with carrots), but I, honestly, sort of chose to ignore the dangers lurking on the regular produce shelves. Recently, I started hearing about grapes from a few friends. It’s sort of a no brainer than any fruit or veggie that you eat the skin of is probably best in the organic variety. Twice over the last month, I heard that because grapes skins are so thin, the pesticides can seep all the way through the grape. This is scary since I know pesticides have been linked to many different conditions and even cancer. That’s definitely not ideal…

Oxybenzone: The Cancer of Sunscreen?

Sunscreen on back on the beach

What exactly is oxybenzone? It is an organic compound used in sunscreens because of its ability to absorb UVB and short UVA rays. As a chemical ingredient, it is also helpful in maintaining the qualities of other ingredients and therefore you will also find it used in conjunction with other chemical ingredients in other personal care products such as lotions, lipstick and nail polish. As an ingredient in products, it may be referred to as Benzophenone-3.

Recipe: Low Sugar But Good Protein Shake

Glas of smoothie at the beach

As a vegetarian, I sometimes find it difficult to get enough protein into my diet. On average I was getting around 20 grams of protein per day by eating what I thought were high protein foods: mostly beans, lentils and nuts. I went to see a nutritionist and she said, “Girl, you are protein starved!” Everything else in my diet was great. I eat mostly whole, organic foods. I have been vegetarian for about five years now and have been a bit more tired than normal of late. So, the nutritionist asked me to keep a food diary for two weeks and her recommendation was to eat more protein. She also shared that it takes about a cup of beans to equal the protein in 1 ounce of meat!! Who knew?!? So unless I plan to eat 4-6 cups of beans each day, I need to look at some other sources for protein in my diet…
