How Does SodaStream Work?

Want to know how to make flavored sparkling water with SodaStream? Each SodaStream varies slightly, but the video below will give you a general idea of how to use SodaStream.

Is SodaStream Soda Maker Cheaper Than…

You have to purchase the SodaStream, CO2 cylinders and syrup flavors to make your own soda. Is SodaStream cheaper than buying sparkling water? What about SodaStream vs soda cost? Below is information from The Simple Dollar, which did the math for us.

One two-liter bottle of soda costs $0.80 to $1.00; therefore one-liter of pop costs $0.40 to $0.50. To make a liter of SodaStream soda:

  • 130 liters of CO= $30 or $0.23 per liter
  • Enough syrup for 12 liters of soda = $5 or $0.41 per liter

That means it costs $0.64 for one liter of soda, not to mention the startup cost of purchasing the SodaStream machine to begin with. In the end, SodaStream is more expensive than buying bottled soda. Generally speaking, sparkling water is often more expensive than soda, so if SodaStream is more expensive than soda, it is more expensive than sparkling water. But, if you drink a lot of soda or bottled water today, the environmental impact of not wasting individual containers (cans, bottles, etc.) may make this an eco-friendly choice. It is also more convenient and reduces transportation costs for you driving to the grocery store and for the grocery delivery trucks and entire supply chain as well.

Drink More Water Daily

One of the main reasons behind SodaStream is to get people to drink more water. Adding a little carbonation and a slice of lime can jazz up what many think of as a bland beverage. You will also want to make sure you’re putting the best water into your body by using a quality water filter.

What are your favorite SodaStream flavors?

It’s more eco friendly that buying bottles of soda, but is it really? With all the C02 canister replacements and plastic packaging for the flavors the waste could be just as much, if not more? It is convenient though and seems healthier since the flavors are less sugary and toxic than sodas or other artificial sparkling beverages.

The co2 canisters are reusable though. A spare one will set back $30, but when you exchange a used canister for a new one, needing where you go, they will give you a 10$ discount.

Environmentally, the co2 canister has minimal impact. Also, those calculations will have to be adjusted to show cost over time not over volume.

Eruc, thanks for sharing! We recently switched to a Sodastream maker to help reduce the # of plastic bottles we use from purchasing soda and other drinks, so that’s good to know there’s a recycling program for canisters. In fact, according to SodaStream’s website Bed Bath & Beyond, Best Buy, Staples, Target, Wal-Mart, and Williams-Sonoma are a few national retailers that participate in the exchange program. When you bring in the empty cylinder, they’ll charge you only for the gas in the new one! They also have a direct mail program with free shipping in select states.

In the cafeteria of my office building, I just spent $1.50 a piece for 20oz (591ml) bottles of sparkling water. The sodas cost about the same. I think I’m going to come out ahead in year 1 if I put one a SodaStream on my desk.
